Collection of uncertainties

The Collection of uncertanties finds its source in the Belgian digitized heritage collections made public. Thanks to the online catalogues and the progressive digitization of the collections, the search opens up not only to scientific classifications and descriptions but also to the “notes” or “remarks” of the notice. Hence, facilitating cross-referencing and mixing of the keywords from the thesaurus with elements entered more freely. Thus, paradoxically, the more details the scientist or archivist provides - by annotating and thereby introducing nuances - on the origin of an object, the more the fields of the probable, the unsolved and the possible open up to us. Objects sometimes frozen at a date or function can now become objects illustrating doubt, another possible or unclear story. The Collection of uncertainties is composed of all items whose notice contains vocabulary with an uncertain tendency, i.e. words such as “probable”, “probably”, “undoubtedly”, “perhaps”, “almost”, “sometimes”, “uncertain”, etc., in French, Dutch or English. It consists of about ten to a few thousand “articles” depending on the languages or levels of uncertainty chosen, with no identical results for translated or similar words. Depending on the additions or modifications, the Collection of uncertainties is in perpetual evolution, much like knowledge, it evolves according to the uncertain knowledge and recognition of the scientific world.

A close reading by Anne Laforet, October 2020

Collection of uncertainties (Collection des incertitudes), a project by Marie Lécrivain and Colm O’Neill, raises questions about the vocabulary of uncertainty, in several languages, as it occurs in the Carmentis database of the collections of the Brussels Royal Museums of Art and History. Through various browsing modes it uncovers texts that are usually hidden deep within the museum’s databases. The web user explores the artists’ proposal through a dynamic interface in which texts and images are displayed side by side with words from the lexical field of doubt and uncertainty, which appear in another colour. The result mixes objects from heterogenous collections, eras and usages.

It is also possible to explore the project through graphics and to display entries grouped by keywords. The data were gathered through repeated methodical scraping operations of the databases that are accessible online in 2019 and 2020, thereby enabling us to observe the evolution of the entries. These entries in museum catalogues contain several elements (not only texts but also images), which together allow us to identify the objects in the collections. This identification concerns the objects itself, with information about their creation and usage before they entered the museum (origin, materials, date, dimensions, description, technique, context in which they were gathered ...) but also about the collection management once the objects are acquired (collection within the museum, inventory number, storage, display and loan history, conservation actions etc.). Part of this information is not made publicly available through the online interfaces; only the accessible information is visible in Marie Lécrivain and Colm O’Neill’s project.

Several forms of uncertainty are found, either regarding the objects (their origin, materials or usage), or relating to more general remarks about the context of the works. The artists’ experimental device allows to search for keywords in French, Dutch and English, showing different ways of expressing uncertainty, as well as the daily work of multilingual institutions. The selected descriptions also offer a different view on the work of the collection management (for instance when many objects have the same name or when several series have the same descriptor). A mundane act such as copying/pasting information takes on a whole other meaning in the database, and the museum’s model based on spectacularly highlighting exceptional works stands in stark contrast with the reality of the institution and its many storage spaces filled with similar objects.

By approaching the works in another way than through a standard museum visit or by browsing the digitalised online collection, this project shines a light on the hypothesis in the museum’s discourse on the objects it contains. The aim of the project is not to determine what is missing: the many empty fields in the object entries are not the focus of attention of the Collection of uncertainties, nor are terms such as “unknown” used as subject for data extraction. Doubt or uncertainty creates a more subtle, more ambiguous and frictional relationship with the museum institution as a place of power, the inheritor of a colonialist approach to the accumulation of economic, political, cultural and symbolic capital. The Collection of Uncertainties brings to the fore the grey areas, the areas of negotiations, the transactions that occur through the scientific practices applied to the objects in the museum itself. The latter presents itself as an unmovable place of knowledge about the objects, through contemporary classification systems that are relics of the colonial project. They are thoroughly engrained in the way the collections are assembled, regardless of the origin or the epoch of the constituting elements. The digitalisation of the collections is the next step in this process, despite the wish for greater accessibility of the knowledge. Colonial ghosts haunt the cracks and crevices of Carmentis, and Marie Lécrivain and Colm O’Neill’s experimental device allows us to catch a glimpse of some of them, through the first phase of a profound transformation that is needed to dislodge them.
