If we accept that #AnotherWorldIsPossible, then maybe this aspiration should scale and render around us on multiple levels and in multiple domains. If we can think of many manifestations of difference(s), for a variety of experiences/subjectivities and contexts, we should consider not only differences of information and knowledge in terms of content but also its form, logic, experience, and access points. Different versions of different “truths” are not only different perspectives and arguments in the system but potentially different (world-making) systems, models of viewing, and argumentation-making as well. In the case of the monumental Wikipedia project, this should go far. As this digital commons project aims at being free, open, participatory, collaborative, accessible, neutral, accumulative, and universal it also fails to accommodate different modes of (re)producing itself and therefore relating to different realities. As it has grown to a size of epic proportions it also accommodates hegemonic aspirations and renders Wikipedia admins with fairly notorious reputations for disciplining - normalized. The institutional-like protocols and armatures that are built to sustain a particular vision of encyclopedic work also reduce the elasticity that was once essential for Wiki (sub)culture(s).

The Hawaiian word “Wiki” means “quick” and was initially used to describe web content development through spontaneous, organic, and incremental web-making; its structure would emerge from the content accumulation and form articulation via constant editing and refactoring. Ward Cunningham (author of the first WikiWikiWeb) was interested in tracking the number and locations of wiki page edits as a sociological experiment and considered even the degradation of a wiki page as part of its process towards stability. ‘There are those who give and those who take. You can tell by reading what they write.’ (Ward Cunningham, 2009) The current state of Wikipedia as a platform leaves little space to imagine such non-formal and non-normalized approaches and/or space for experimentation; the room for diverting from norms is super limited if even possible. Content conflicts as ‘edit wars’ are hidden under a single tab link and nothing on the front page hints at the impression of the state of potential contestation or even just web-making (power)dynamics.

Diff3r3ntVversionsArePOSSIBLE?!. points to some of these issues in explicit and implicit ways by considering queer perspectives as counter-normative positions that are not only antagonistic interventions but also ridicule and hope to retract the dominant logic of single ‘neutral viewpoint’ objectivity and its oppressive implications.

A close reading by Anne Laforet, October 2020

Diff3r3ntVversionsArePOSSIBLE?!. by Z. consists of a series of interventions that scrutinise Wikipedia with regard to collaboration, conflict and multiplicity.

But instead of being a space fostering a plurality of approaches and viewpoints, Wikipedia is presented as a place of uniformity and univocity. On the one hand, because knowledge is approached through a universalist perspective derived from colonial and heteronormative disciplinary concepts where the written word is the norm. On the other hand, because of the practice of registering this knowledge in writing, whereby objectivity and neutrality, even though they are impossible, are set forth as principles and are used to smother any attempt at diverging conceptions. As an organisation, Wikipedia is partially aware of this chasm between its programme and its realisation, and answers with a call for diversity. The participation of more women, racialised and queer people etc. is publicly encouraged, by supporting a foundation that fosters contributors’ initiatives and partly through updates to its institutional discourse. This discourse, presented in the shape of actions, is however not coupled with a will to question and transform the power relations and diverse representation between contributors or the ways to approach knowledge, so as to address different conditions and enable a plurality of voices.

Diff3r3ntVversionsArePOSSIBLE?!. compiles a number of tactics to combat the normalisation of the online encyclopaedia and to decentralise its hegemonic stories thanks to a queer perspective. The “queerification” rubs up against the current situation and exposes relationships of dominance, destabilising the categories and taxonomies. The queerification operations bundled by Z. occur in different shapes and temporalities, and not only concern the production of content for the encyclopaedia (adding of articles and information by and for LGBTQIA+ people), but also the interface (added functions) and its social organisation (organisation and coordination of events and actions). These operations are listed on the queer.wikispore.org page that was created by Z.. Wikispore is a wiki platform intended for experiments and is hosted by the foundation. Apart from a link to Queer Spore, Diff3r3ntVversionsArePOSSIBLE?!. also offers a homepage showing short videos with LGBTQIA+ Wikipedia contributors explaining what it means to them to queerify Wikipedia, along with the importance of their activities for the LGBTQIA+ communities and more in general for web users. These videos were produced by Z. thanks to funding from the Wikimedia foundation, the non-profit organisation hosting the encyclopaedia and its sister projects. They also announce the upcoming Queering Wikipedia conference (planned for 2021), the first conference about these topics supported by the foundation. There is a public call for funding (and complexitities of production on Talk page), with a link from the Queer Wikispore page. These videos are accompanied by a conversation between Z., Élodie Mugreyfa and Femke Snelting, members of Constant and the driving forces behind DiVersions, in which they elaborate on the stakes of the project and its formal proposal.

Queer Spore also hosts speculative proposals regarding the Wikipedia infrastructure. Based on the wiki, it works with the cumulative versions, i.e. the successive additions of information, that are presented as linear and static, unless the web user chooses to abandon the default combination of “Article” and “Read” and clicks on “Talk”, “View history” or another link in the right-hand column on the website. The collective writing process and the ensuing conflicts are not readable in one single view. Diff3r3ntVversionsArePOSSIBLE?!. speculates on adding banners to make the plurality of the approaches visible, or colour codes to identify toxic projects.

Z. proposes a treasure hunt inside the complex sociotechnical structure of Wikipedia and invites web users reading Wikipedia to get a glimpse behind the screens, to read how articles are created and discussed, how events are organised. This way, Diff3r3ntVversionsArePOSSIBLE?!. questions behaviours and interventions in institutions, regardless of their missions, contexts or financial means, through a queerified experimental device. The project is fully nestled within Wikipedia, which leads to frictions, creates alliances, decants ways of doing things, all the while being almost imperceptible, resisting normalisation.Z. proposes a treasure hunt inside the complex sociotechnical structure of Wikipedia and invites web users reading Wikipedia to get a glimpse behind the screens, to read how articles are created and discussed, how events are organised.
