Curatorial proposal for a digital catalogue by AAM 00071.1

For this edition of DiVersion(s) we propose to experiment a prototype of online catalog that enacts and illustrates the dispute between two goddesses: Carmentis, The Roman goddess associated with technological innovation who gives her name to the digital catalog of the MRAH Museum, and the collection object AA0071.1 Tzitzimime (or Xochiquetzal) who is the Aztec goddess that every 52 years threatens the world of destruction, unless humans renew their knowledge during the New Fire Ceremony. This catalog is meant to enhance and explore the ambiguity of data structuring processes which with their versions and conflicts transpose the colonial history of the museum to digital infrastructures. The aim is to build a cross-eyed relation between the narratives (of origin, authenticity, fathership, power demonstration...) embedded in the knowledge production model of the museum's database and catalog, and the informational structures of hypertext language and internet browsers.

The Promiscuous browser is designed to give to the visitor an opportunity to sense the relations between the objects' specific stories and the categorical narratives they are set into. It destabilizes the normal relation between collected object (data), collecting subproducts (metadata) and the hosting structure of the database, so that each object potentially takes hold of the whole catalog structure. Disregarding the security limitations of individualized browsers it opens up the knowledge process to a wild range of sensibilities, including several visitors next to each other on the very same page, sharing the same mouse. In the promiscuous browser milieu, an object performs the display of the web page, re-structuring knowledge and stories in a graphical sense.

Collection: Art and History Museum (Carmentis)

Curatorial proposal for a digital catalogue by AAM 00071.1

Let’s consider the method of collecting and archiving as a narration. A discursive narration that supports argumentation by relying on the paradigm of the origin/the source (with the correlative rhetoric of authenticity and its tools for identification). This graphic novel, seen as curatorial proposition, understands itself as a rereading of the paradigm on which the organization of the collection of the Art and History Museum is based. It also means a narrative development of a new paradigm which is inspired by digitization technologies. Moulding, data matrix and reproduction.

Actually, this story is the narration of the invention of a curatorial proposal for the objects that are part of the collection of the Art and History Museum. An entity/object of a museum embodies itself digitally to propose its proper version, or let’s say its model, of validation regarding the organisation and the creation of an online museum catalogue. The piece whose identity is indeterminate (‘maybe’), suggests as classifying method a fusion of data relying on the objects of the catalogue as well as on the instruction for the collection.

The arguments put forward in the history of this piece of the collection replace the arguments for indexing the museum’s objects, some of which appear in the Carmentis digital catalogue. Instead of relying on scientific proof - a scientific rationalization of authenticity - the version told by this piece of the museum is based on the assumption that the history of the objects from Carmentis’ point of view is a narrative developed thanks to and through technical and conceptual tools. In other words, the way of caring for the objects of a collection is a manner of reproducing their meaning.

This graphic novel/this proposition/this exposition seeks to suggest a different way of narrating the museum objects. Here our story relies on the version of the piece AAM 00071.1 ‘statue representing maybe the goddess Xochiquetzal or a Tzitzimime’ – might be the protecting goddess for pregnant women, or maybe goddess of world destruction. Also it could be what we imagine by contemplating the statue. For sure it is a piece of the museum’s collection. We can perceive its materiality by visiting the museum, but its origin, its identity, its authenticity, the path that connects us to its author is never sure ... the father is never sure.

A close reading by Anne Laforet, October 2020

A New Fire Ceremony (Une nouvelle cérémonie de feu) by Zoumana Meïté and Martino Morandi is an experimental browser-based intervention using the Carmentis database of the Royal Museums of Art and History. The title of the work refers to Tzitzimime, the Aztec goddess who every 52 years threatens to destroy the world, unless humankind renews its knowledge during a fire ceremony.

This intervention is a dialogue between the Aztec goddess and Carmentis, the Roman goddess of new technology and childbirth. Carmentis allows access to the digitalised works in the collections through various search fields (material, date, origin, dimensions, technique, description ...). It is meant to facilitate discoveries of the works outside of the museum. Tzitzimime is catalogued in the inventory under the number AAM 00071.1. She represents an agent of destabilisation of the museum institute backed up by a colonial system, with regard to the definition of the taxonomies as well as to the gathering and processing of the objects. Tzitzimime calls for a profound transformation, aimed at restoring relationships. She will however destroy these relationships if repair is not possible, in cases where the modalities regarding knowledge, and the power it brings, are not questioned.

In this dialog, the browser occupies a central role, as it is used for consulting the database. Zoumana Meïté and Martino Morandi’s intervention takes place on the Carmentis website, but through a modified browser, either with a so-called promiscuous browser or through an extension for the Firefox browser. The promiscuous browser is a browser that has been specifically modified for Carmentis. It is accessible through a browser (with the help of a virtual machine) than can handle several users simultaneously. It is more suitable for an installation in an exhibition rather than for online consulting and is therefore not always accessible. The Firefox-extension allows for a similar result when consulting the carmentis.be website.

Through this intervention, A New Fire Ceremony suggests a prototype for museum catalogues. Each object that is searched for in the database changes the way the results are displayed on the screen. Depending on the registered material in the catalogue (animal-based, plant-based, stone, undetermined ...), the display of the object entry is altered. For instance, if the material is ‘metal’, the text pivots and the entry colours are completely inverted. Other elements of the entry, such as the dimensions or the date, function as parameters for the transformations. For instance, with metallic objects, the dimensions influence the rotation angle. Through this process, a relationship of reciprocity is formed between the objects and the structure that classifies and processes them, opening up possibilities for the circulation and hybridisation of stories.

This browser-based intervention also highlights the proximities between the hierarchical structure of the museum database and the Document Object Model. The latter is a programming interface allowing scripts to investigate and to modify the contents of the web browser. Both can be represented as logical trees, with the possibility to add or remove branches. This resemblance allows for the visual transformation. A New Fire Ceremony also includes a text and diagrams to illustrate these relationships and the mutations caused by the promiscuous browser.

With A New Fire Ceremony, Zoumana Meïté and Martino Morandi take up a position of critical interdependence with regard to the museum institution. Their tools are tactical, similar to scraping, the copying of data from the outside of an information system, the difference here being that their intervention does not occur on a copy. They are dialoguing with Carmentis through digital rebellion, an act of resistance against technocolonialism, directed at the museum collections. This is done by using authentic museum data in real time, which are then subverted. Tzitzimime generates f(r)ictions, speculations that transcend the museum or even make it obsolete, like a version that needs to be updated or deleted.
