If we accept that #AnotherWorldIsPossible, maybe this aspiration should scale and render around us on multiple levels. 

We can think of many manifestations of differences, for a variety of experiences. To render these differences, one should consider not only difference of information in content, but also its form and access points. Different versions of “truths” are not only different perspectives and arguments in the same system, but potentially different systems or models for seeing and doing the argumentation as well. 

In the case of Wikipedia this could go even further. Even this free, open, collaboratively made and exemplary monumental digital commons project fails to accommodate different modes of (re)producing itself and therefore relating to different (sub)cultures. It has grown to a size of epic proportions that often hosts hegemonic aspirations and makes average Wikipedia editors have fairly notorious reputations for disciplining. Institutional-like protocols and armatures are built to sustain this encyclopedic work, which reduce its flexibility that was once essential for Wiki culture.

The Hawaiian word “Wiki” means “quick” and was initially used to describe web content development through spontaneous, organic and incremental web making; its structure would emerge from content accumulation and constant editing and refactoring. Ward Cunningham (author of the first WikiWikiWeb) was interested in tracking the number and locations of wiki page edits as a sociological experiment, and considered even the degradation of a wiki page as part of its process to stability. ‘There are those who give and those who take. You can tell by reading what they write.’ (Ward Cunningham, 2009)

The current state of Wikipedia as a platform leaves little space to imagine such non-formalized approaches and/or space for experimentation; the room for diverting from norms is super limited if it is even possible. Content conflicts are hidden under a single tab link and nothing on the front page hints at the impression of the state of potential contestation or even just web-making (power)dynamics.

Diff3r3ntVversionsArePOSSIBLE?!. points to these issues in explicit and implicit ways by considering queer perspectives as counter-normative positions that not only antagonistic, but also ridicule and eradicate the logic of a single point objectivity and its oppressive implications.

Si nous acceptons que #UnAutreMondeEstPossible, cette aspiration devrait peut-être gagner de l’ampleur et prendre forme autour de nous à d’autres niveaux.

Nous pouvons penser à de nombreuses déclinaisons de différences pour une variété d’expériences. Pour rendre ces différences, il faut tenir compte non seulement de la différence de contenu de l’information, mais aussi de sa forme et de ses points d’accès. Les différentes versions des ‘vérités’ ne sont pas seulement des perspectives et des arguments différents dans le même système, mais aussi des systèmes potentiellement différents en tant que modèles de vision et d’argumentation. 
Dans le cas de Wikipédia, cela pourrait aller encore plus loin. Ce projet numérique, gratuit et collaboratif ne parvient pas non plus à s’adapter aux différents modes de (re)production et donc aux différentes (sous-)cultures. Il a pris des proportions épiques qui attisent souvent des aspirations hégémoniques et font que les éditeurs de Wikipédia écopent d’une triste réputation via leurs rappels à l’ordre constants. Des protocoles et des armatures de type institutionnel sont conçus pour soutenir ce travail encyclopédique, ce qui réduit sa flexibilité qui était autrefois essentielle à la culture wiki.

Le mot hawaïen ‘Wiki’ signifie ‘rapide’ et a été utilisé à l’origine pour décrire le développement de contenu web par le biais d’une création web spontanée, organique et incrémentale, qui aurait une structure émergeant de l’accumulation de contenu et de l’édition/refactoring constant. Par exemple, Ward Cunningham (auteur du premier WikiWikiWeb) suit le nombre et l’emplacement des éditions de pages wiki en tant qu’expérience sociologique et envisage même la dégradation d’une page wiki dans le cadre de son processus de stabilité. « Il y a ceux qui donnent et ceux qui prennent. Vous pouvez le deviner en lisant ce qu’ils écrivent. » (Ward Cunningham, 2009)

L’état actuel de Wikipédia en tant que plateforme laisse peu à imaginer pour de telles approches non formelles et/ou un espace d’expérimentation ; le détournement des normes est très limité, dans les cas où c’est possible. Les conflits de contenu sont cachés sous un seul onglet et il n’y a aucun indice sur la page d’accueil montrant l’état d’une contestation potentielle ou même d’une simple dynamique (de pouvoir) du web making.


VversionsDiff3r3ntSontPOSSIBLE ? souligne ces questions de manière explicite et implicite en considérant les perspectives queer comme des positions contre-normatives qui non seulement contrarient, mais aussi ridiculisent et éradiquent la logique de l’objectivité à point unique et ses implications oppressantes.

Als we denken dat #EenAndereWereldIsMogelijk, misschien moeten we dit streven dan ook op meer niveaus zichtbaar maken.

We kunnen heel veel verschijningsvormen bedenken voor verschillen en voor een verscheidenheid aan ervaringen. Om deze weer te geven, moeten we niet alleen rekening houden met de inhoudelijke verschillen in informatie, maar ook met de vorm en de toegang ertoe. Verschillende versies van ‘waarheden’ zijn niet alleen verschillende perspectieven en argumenten binnen hetzelfde systeem, maar we moeten ook denken aan verschillende systemen en modellen voor de manier waarop we argumenteren.

Wikipedia zou nog verder kunnen gaan. Zelfs dit vrije, open, gezamenlijk gemaakte en exemplarische, monumentale digital commons project, slaagt er niet in om verschillende vormen van (re)productie te verwelkomen en zich te verbinden met verschillende (sub)culturen. Wikipedia is uitgegroeid tot een omvang van epische proporties met soms hegemonische aspiraties, wat ervoor zorgt dat de gemiddelde Wikipedia-editor berucht is om haar disciplinaire maatregelen. De institutionele protocollen en armaturen die zijn ontwikkeld om dit encyclopedische werk te ondersteunen, verminderen de flexibiliteit die ooit essentieel was voor de Wiki-cultuur.

Wikipedia als platform laat op dit moment weinig verbeelding toe om zich dergelijke niet-geformaliseerde benaderingen en/of ruimte voor experimenten voor te stellen; de ruimte om van normen af te wijken, is, indien die al bestaat, zeer beperkt. Conflicten over inhoud zijn verborgen onder één enkele tab-link en niets op de voorpagina geeft een indruk van de staat van potentiële betwisting of zelfs maar van de (machts)dynamiek die zich afspeelt rond het redigeren van de pagina.

V3rschill3nd3VversiesZijnMOGELIJK?!. wijst op deze kwesties op expliciete en impliciete wijze door queerperspectieven te beschouwen als standpunten die niet alleen tegennormatief zijn, maar die ook de logica van een eenpuntsobjectiviteit en de onderdrukkende implicaties ervan, belachelijk maken en uitbannen.
